NEAB is the only registered national body for EIA planners, practitioners and enforcing agencies in Bangladesh with 153 members.

Environmental Conservation Rules (ECR), 1997

Other measures dealing with the environment include the Fifth Five Year Plan (1997-2002) and the National Conservation Strategy.

Project Categories requiring EIA: Under the ECR 1997, entrepreneurs are required to arrange Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and EIA depending upon the category of the project (green, amber-A, amber-B and red) based on their expected level of pollution, and submit an Environmental Management Plan.

There are over 20 local consulting companies engaged in conducting EIA. The Department of Environment (DOE) is authorised to implement, review and approve/reject EIAs.

EIA trainings are conducted by NEAB, Bangladesh Engineering University, Environment and GIS Unit, Jahangir Nagar University, Public Administration Training Center, and the Academy for Planning and Development etc.

Baseline information can be obtained from Local Governments, Met office, DOE, universities and research organizations.

Areas of possible regional cooperation: Natural disasters; Transboundary issues; Energy Sector; Climate change issues.
